Maskelah Gabriel-Adams

Maskelah Gabriel-Adams is a passionate filmmaker, film sales executive, and academic dedicated to championing Black British cinema. As the founder of AfroFilms UK, she is on a mission to bring Black British stories to a global audience, ensuring independent filmmakers receive the recognition and opportunities they deserve.

With a BA in Filmmaking from Nottingham Trent University and an MA in Film Distribution and Marketing from Birmingham City University, Maskelah has honed her expertise in film sales, distribution, and audience engagement. Her deep understanding of the industry was shaped by her research on the distribution landscape of Black British independent films and hands-on experience at major film markets, including Cannes' Marché du Film, where she interned with GFM Animations.

Beyond her career, Maskelah is a devoted single mother to three boys, aged 4, 6, and 7. One of whom have autism and ADHD, and while managing everything can be overwhelming at times, she finds strength in community. Her mum is her biggest support, always there to help navigate the ups and downs of motherhood. In 2021, Maskelah made the brave decision to flee domestic abuse, relocating from London to Nottinghamshire, where she and her children have built a new life.

Through resilience, creativity, and determination, Maskelah is building a legacy that merges art, culture, and commerce—creating spaces where diverse stories thrive while proving that strength and success can emerge from even the most challenging circumstances.
